A lot of history buffs do not like to read the New Testament that has been translated by others. One reason for this is that they feel that the essence of the document is lost somewhere in the translation. But reading the New Testament in Greek is not an easy job and this makes the real enthusiast actually try to learn the Greek alphabet so they can enjoy reading the New Testament. You may not be a biblical scholar but knowing the Greek alphabet will help you with even a basic research on the biblical text.
The New Testament has a lot of words and concepts and a running knowledge of the Greek Language will help you to use a Greek Lexicon or a Theological Dictionary effectively. You will learn that Greek terms carry a somewhat different meaning to the English equivalent. It will show you how to understand the connection between words - for example, “Angel and Evangelist” and “Gospel and Messenger” are associated with a Greek word called “AggeloV”. You can even augment your English vocabulary because in English, words like philanthropy, patristic exegesis and cosmology have different meanings and can be used to convey a different idea. It also goes without saying that knowledge of the Greek Alphabet will aid the study of mathematics and science and somewhere along the line, it helps you in joining sororities and fraternities with common interest thus giving your social life a leg-up.
